Kyushu Travels: Part 7/8, Kagoshima

Our favourite city of this trip has to be Kagoshima. The vibe of this place, it’s beauty and history and food is so amazing. We were surprised, not expecting to love the place as much as we did. Reflecting now though, I think about how much we love Kamakura and I feel like it’s obvious we would love it. Beautiful waters, beautiful views and away from the bustle of Tokyo life. We could happily retire here without worries I think, like Kamakura. Of course I am not saying the cities are super similar, not at all, they are both very unique and rich in history and different cultures and dialects but, the vibe is similar somehow. I can’t quite describe it. Basically, if you love one, it’s not surprising you’d love the other.

We had three nights in Kagoshima, in a cute hotel with unique wooden furniture and a great coffee machine in every room. It felt like home for a short while and we definitely hope to stay there again. We found a local coffee shop that we loved, some restaurants we could see ourselves being regulars in, and we fell in love with Mt Sakurajima as we watched the sun set over her from a viewpoint on that first night. Images just can’t do it justice, but I tried to show you at least a sliver of the beauty of Kagoshima through the eyes of my camera.

Luckily whilst we were there, Kagoshima’s biggest dance festival was happening. We got to see the streets filled with lanterns and dancers in bright colours, as well as watch and learn some of their steps as they paraded the streets in time to the music. I never wanted it to end, but of course we had to keep moving. The final stop of our trip awaited.
